“Indifference” is a dark digital art illustration created for the cover art of the album “Six Indifferent Places” by the band Stone Division.
anxiety /ɪnˈdɪf(ə)rəns/ noun
After the release of my best-seller “Deliberation”, I was frecuently asked to create similar images for cover arts of many bands and books. I accepted to do a couple of them, and after that, I decided it was time to move on to other ideas and aesthetics. “Indifference” was the first of them.
I was given a very short brief: The band had recorded the album in six different studios which were indifferent to them, and I had to do something about it. Instead of creating an indifferent character, which I considered could be very boring for a cover art, I decided to do the opposite: to portray the feeling of being totally ignored by someone else.
The amount of pain, anger and anxiety of that reaction can be clearly seen in this illustration: a exploding statue against a very bold blood red background, shattering into pieces at the gaze of someone disregarding them, trying to hold herself as the remains of her head fly across the canvas. I colored the skin into a pale blue for contrast, and added hard lighting to enhance the dramatic effect.
“Indifference” is a very powerful artwork and not for the faint of heart. Its striking color palette alongside its aggresiveness is contrasted by the perplexed gaze of the protagonist. It can turn any room into a whirlwind of emotions, no matter the surroundings, as it mixes classicism and modernism with a touch a contemporary gothic dark art drama that will delight anyone looking to set a strong statement in their space.
