“Discovery” is a mixed media whimsical digital art piece. Many different techniques were used during its production in Adobe Photoshop. It was created for the exhibition “Freedom”, produced by the international artistic collective Hysterical Minds.
discovery /dɪˈskʌv(ə)ri/ noun
“Discovery” is my most whimsical artwork. It’s calm, peaceful and contemplative. It’s the closest thing to a children’s illustration I have ever done. Originally commissioned for an exhibition about freedom, I though it would be on point to free myself from my working methods and try something new for a change. The result has a touch of darkness, that contrasts with the innocence gaze of a child that looks like an angel or any fantasy creature that inhabits his mind.
The main theme of this illustration is imagination. The character is probably seeing a flying goldfish for the first time, and the world around him changes and mutates into a world of fantasy: his very own mind. I envy the feeling of being constantly in awe, like children do. Everything is a new discovery for them, and that feeds their imagination and allows them to create great stories on their minds without carrying all the social constructs that burden us as adults. Any little thing for them, can be a major experience.
“Discovery” is a breath of fresh air. Is bold, iconic and tender. It’s magical. It reminds us to keep on being the child we have inside. To experiment, to try new things, to discover and find the beauty in the smallest things in life. We can still be him.
This artwork received the Exposé Master Award in the Abstract & Design category in 2012.
