How Midjourney helped me

Resurgere – How Midjourney Helped Me

Resurgere: latin voice for “to raise again”.

Some months ago, after finishing my series Psychoclimatic Conditions, I was willing to keep on creating emotional portraits. I came with the idea of creating a series of illustrations of people hiding or emerging from things, mostly plants and flowers. It was going to be called “e-Merge” (or something like that… bear with me, this was a working title!) since they would be very hidden or merging with the surroundings. I gathered some photographic resources for it but then I started to experiment with artificial intelligence and I put the project on hold.

Then one of my outcomes with AI experimentation with Midjourney was a series of iridescent seaweed I created by mixing fish fins and leaves, and suddenly I remembered about this project.

If you are familiarized with Midjourney, these images were created the second version of the algorithm and they look terrible in high resolution (they have a lot of JPG artifacts), so once I had the composition done, I had to paint over everything. I had two weeks of fine detailing every single line and my wrist ended up hurting a bit, but I think the result was worth it. What you see is basically a painting done over a rough digital collage from the Midjourney images.

In the end, I think this illustration was a way of telling myself that I was coming back artistically speaking, since I had been a bit absent from personal artistic endeavors these latest years. So it’s like resurfacing from the deep bottoms of the sea. I know that a lot of people is concerned about the usage of artificial intelligence but it has brought me a lot of new inspiration and has definitely had a great impact on my mental health, as now some of the struggles I use to deal with in terms of creativity seem to be evaporating. I try to use these tools in the most ethical way possible, by outsourcing my own images and sketches as base images for the algorithm to work with, and by not using any other artists names to create my generative images in he prompts (after all, I want to create art with my style, not with someone else’s… that’s just wrong). I know some of you won’t agree with me, but things like Midjourney or StableDiffusion are just tools, and if most people are using them the wrong way, that doesn’t mean we cannot create great, ethical things from it.

I’d love to know your opinions about this matter in the comments, I’ll gladly engage into the conversation with you 🙂

And lastly, I have made “Resurgere” available as fine art prints and canvases that you can find either by visiting my shop, or by clicking the image below. See you around!
